ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ADVOCACY

Improve a million buildings at NYC’s most impactful environmental nonprofit.

Urban Green Council, the local affiliate of the U.S. Green Building Council, is looking for a policy prodigy to envision and drive green building change in New York City.

Urban Green is NYC’s go-to organization on building policy, twice managing blue ribbon commissions on behalf of the city, most recently following Superstorm Sandy. Annually, the organization passes an average of 20 code reforms, with about half of 138 combined task force recommendations implemented to date.

With the rise of a progressive new Mayor and City Council, Urban Green will play a central role in re-envisioning sustainability in NYC, including an emphasis on housing. The Associate Director of Advocacy will lead Urban Green’s work with experts from the world’s most sophisticated real estate industry to chart the policy course forward.

About the Position

The Associate Director will lead Urban Green’s advocacy work with the NYC Mayor’s Office and City Council, NYS Governor’s Office and NYSERDA, and numerous professional associations including the Real Estate Board of New York. Core projects will include working with the Mayor’s Office and City Council on sustainability planning, and continued implementation of recommendations from the Building Resiliency Task Force and Green Codes Task Force. The Associate Director reports to the Chief Program Officer and will oversee two staff and a research fellow. As part of the extended leadership team, the Associate Director is involved in organizational planning and interfaces regularly with the senior leadership of Urban Green and several volunteer committees.

Nimble and rapidly growing, Urban Green Council requires an Associate Director of Advocacy who is flexible, resourceful, has a strong personal network within the green building community and is well-respected in the field. This position will provide the qualified candidate broad latitude to shape the field of green building and positively impact the future of New York City.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Planning

  • Work with senior staff to establish annual organizational goals
  • Implement annual business/operating plan for department

Advocacy
Assist Mayor’s Office, City Council, and city agencies on various policy initiatives including:

  • Overall sustainability planning
  • Drafting and reviewing legislation and agency rules implementing recommendations of the NYC Green Codes Task Force and Building Resiliency Task Force
  • Development and adoption of an updated New York City Energy Conservation Code and Existing Building Code
  • Reducing regulatory barriers, including the permitting process
  • Develop content for Urban Green advocacy-related media campaigns, including improving building envelopes
  • With the Research Department, assist in the preparation of annual reports on NYC benchmarking and audit/retrocommissioning data
  • Assist with solicitation of sponsors and preparation of program information for foundation funding

Departmental Management

  • Supervise Advocacy Manager, Advocacy Coordinator, Research Fellow, interns, consultants, and volunteer committees
  • Oversee project schedules and budgets
  • Direct staff resources to ensure high quality delivery of programs
  • Ensure professional staff development and maintain an engaging and satisfying workplace
  • Review departmental processes and systems, suggest improvements as appropriate

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • Degree in Architecture or Engineering, or equivalent relevant work experience
  • At least 7 years work experience in green building, including construction, retrofits, and building operations
  • Strong connection to the NYC governmental, building, and real estate   community
  • Familiarity with building codes, particularly the energy code
  • Excellent writing, editing, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Expert understanding of current environmental issues, green building, and the real estate industry
  • Ability to work well in groups, including volunteer committees
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, including those that may involve consultants
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task
  • Creativity, energy, confidence, integrity, initiative, and independence

OUTREACH & DELIVERY MANAGER

Urban Green is NYC’s go-to organization on building education policy, twice managing blue ribbon commissions on behalf of the city, most recently following Superstorm Sandy. Annually, the organization passes an average of 20 code reforms and trains thousands of professionals on cutting-edge construction. It has averaged over 30% annual growth in staff size and budget for the last seven years.

GPRO is our flagship educational program, teaching the people who build and operate buildings what they need to know about green. With 5,000 students taught across 7 states and averaging a 9 out of 10 rating by attendees, the program is poised for significant expansion and increased impact. The Outreach & Delivery manager will lead our work with local and national organizations and bring green knowledge to crucial market segments.

About the Position

The Outreach & Delivery Manager will manage the expansion and delivery of GPRO and energy code training to New York State design professionals. Core responsibilities include increasing the number of GPRO classes, marketing energy code training to 5,000 design professionals over 3 years, and annual business planning in cooperation with the Director of Education Development and the Chief Operating Officer.  Supervising 2 staff and 2 full-time interns, the Manager will report to the COO and is charged with building relationships with new and existing clients and contacts, including unions, building owners, and associations that will result in increased sales.

Urban Green Council requires an outgoing, flexible and proactive Outreach & Delivery Manager with an impressive sales track record, marketing knowledge, and a strong background in green building. This position will provide the qualified candidate with a major role in advancing the green building movement in the United States.

Key responsibilities

  • Increase GPRO student volume at least 20 percent through partner education, outreach and cultivation of local and national sales leads
  • Oversee the marketing and delivery of energy code training to 5,000 design professionals in New York State
  • Assist and coach GPRO Delivery Partners, including real estate companies, construction trade unions, USGBC chapters, contractors and subcontractors, with outreach and messaging to increase their number of students
  • Supervise two staff who oversee course delivery and logistics.
  • Generate leads, conduct sales calls and presentations and follow-up with potential clients; some travel may be required
  • Participate in the development of an annual marketing plan along with the COO and the Urban Green Communications Department and oversee execution of ongoing marketing activities for GPRO and energy code training
  • Work with the COO on annual business planning, including budgets and sales projections.
  • Maintain a continuous pipeline of upcoming classes and sales prospects

Required Qualifications/Skills

The ideal candidate will have experience in the building/construction industry, proven sales and negotiating skills and a strong attention to detail. Additionally, s/he will be a self-starter with the ability to think through problems and identify forward-looking solutions.

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of three years related work experience, including sales planning and successfully meeting sales goals
  • Proven interest in and understanding of green building and environmental issues
  • Project and account management experience
  • Outstanding organizational skills and proven ability to follow-through on long- and short-term tasks
  • Strong communication, writing and interpersonal skills (a writing exercise may be required)
  • Proven experience working on fast-paced project teams
  • Experience with customer database/CRM
  • Knowledge of and competence with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Google Docs

Preferred Qualifications/Skills

  • Salesforce experience
  • Good eye for marketing strategies and materials 
  • Experience with adult education programs

Specific Responsibilities

Student Database and Communication

  • Maintain GPRO database (enter student, course and exam information; enter course and exam attendance)
  • Design new reports and functions in database as needed in addition to regular performance

Course and Exam Logistics

  • Grade exams and track exam information
  • Maintain schedule for courses and exams across the country
  • Send out exam score notification e-mails and issue GPRO certificates, wallet cards and hardhat stickers/badges
  • Provide continuing education credit certificates to students upon request
  • Compile course evaluations

General

  • Manage shipping and storage of printed materials with partners across the country
  • Complete GPRO mailings as needed
  • Be a point person for GPRO inquiries by phone and email
  • Track inventory of all printed materials and coordinate with vendors
  • Assist with maintenance of gpro.org
  • Manage 1-2 interns

Qualifications & Skills

Required

  • Knowledge of and competence with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) including mail merges
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Excellent telephone and interpersonal skills

Urban Green is seeking two Education Interns to assist with curriculum development for its education programs, including GPRO: Green Professional Building Skills Training and Conquering the Energy Code. GPRO is a national certificate program delivered through a series of courses and exams, designed to teach the people who build, renovate, and maintain buildings the principles of sustainability and trade-specific green construction knowledge. Conquering the Energy Code is a series of courses that teach architects and engineers the basics of sustainable design and strategies to comply with ever more stringent energy codes.

Candidates should be able to take on multiple projects and work independently with flexibility, enthusiasm, and good humor. Hear from some of our former interns about their experience at Urban Green here.                               

Specific Responsibilities 

  • Research content for inclusion in manuals and presentations
  • Search for photographs for course materials and secure permissions for their use
  • Edit and format manuals in Adobe InDesign and presentations in PowerPoint
  • Revise illustrations using Adobe Illustrator or similar software
  • Attend and review courses 

Required Qualifications/Skills

  • Interest in and understanding of green building and environmental issues
