What is this course about?
Heat pump water heating systems will play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions from buildings. To achieve this, however, these systems need to be installed correctly by skilled plumbers and contractors. This half-day course will provide unionized plumbing and heating industry workers and union-affiliated contractors with the knowledge and skills they need to successfully navigate this growing field. Students will learn what a heat pump water heating system is, how it works, and how to handle common installation and retrofit issues. This training will prepare experienced professionals to confidently apply their skills to domestic hot water electrification projects.
What will you learn?
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Explain the value of electric heat pump water heaters in carbon reduction initiatives.
- Describe the key differences between conventional water heaters and HPWH systems.
- Plan efficient heat pump water heating installations and avoid retrofit-specific pitfalls.
- Explain startup and commissioning strategies.

What should you expect?
This is a 4 hour training that is taught live, either in-person or remotely, by a highly knowledgeable instructor with industry experience. You are encouraged to ask questions and participate during classroom discussions and activities.
All students will receive a Certificate of Completion that offers 3.5 GBCI and AIA credits. The U.S. Department of Energy has recognized this training as Energy Skilled in Heat Pump Water Heater Installation.

This training was developed in partnership with UA Local Union No. 1 Training Center and is currently subsidized by NYSERDA for delivery at UA local unions throughout New York State.
